The Girl In the Closet: About Asperger's Syndrome

I wanted to create this page because I have Asperger's Syndrome, to help educate people about it and promote acceptance of people with Asperger's Syndrome and all other disabilities or difference.
This page is dedicated to the people at the Aspie Hangout message board!

WHAT IS ASPERGER'S SYNDROME?
In 1944 a Viennese physician named Hans Asperger published a paper describing a pattern of behavior he'd discovered in certain young boys. He'd noticed normal intelligence and language development in these boys, yet they showed some behaviors associated with autism. Not until 1994 was Asperger's Syndome added to the DSM IV and recognized by professionals in the United States.

CHARACTERISTICS OF MANY ADULTS AND CHILDREN WITH ASPERGER"S SYNDROME!

* Trouble learning and using social skills that others learn and use automatically.

* Difficulty with transitions and changes in their everyday lives.

* May be more vulnerable or naive than most others their age.

* May become obsessed with keeping certain routines.

*May have special interests or "obsessions" with particular subjects or objects.

* Have trouble reading body language.

* Motor clumsiness. Many have difficulty in and/or have no interest at all in any sports.

* Lots of anxiety.

* May sooth themselves with repetitive motions such as rocking their body, flapping their arms, hands, legs or feet, tapping, etc. These motions may look odd to others, but they are very calming to the person with Asperger's.

* Some speak in monotone voices, or may seem to have an accent different from the natural accent that would be expected of them.

* Senses, especially hearing and feeling, may be very sensitive. People with Asperger's often hate loud noises or clothes of certain textures.

What's the Difference Between Autism and Asperger's Syndrome?

*Asperger's Syndrome is on the Autism Spectrum, which is an entire group of different disorders that could be classified as autism but have important distinctions from each other.

*Some people with Asperger's Syndrome have been diagnosed as having "high-functioning autism", and some people still consider the two diagnosises to be interchangeable.

* For a child with Asperger's Syndrome, parents or caregivers generally notice differences in the child later in his life than parents of children with autism.

* Many children with Asperger's are able to "blend in" earlier and with better results than children with autism.

* Social and communication deficits are less severe than for people with autism.

* While some autistic children and adults are nonverbal, people with Asperger's Syndrome learn to talk at a typical age. They may not speak as much as typical peers, though.

*In an IQ test, people with Asperger's Syndrome often score better in the verbal part than in the performance part.
